Home Restoration Tips for After a Water Damage

Who would think that water can cause so much damage to a home? A flood can cause a minimal quantity of damage or allow you to have to restore a lot of that you feel as if you’re gutting your property completely… as if you are starting over on the building of your property. Unfortunately, the work needs to be done but the outcome will be worth it once you and your family have the ability to move back home. You could even save at the process and in the end – a reward for your hard work.

The very first step that needs to be taken is to protect repairable and undamaged items. There’s a chance that these items might become broken after the floodwaters have subsided. If mold and mildew have begun growing in your home they’ll continue to grow until the house dries completely and the appropriate measures are taken to rid of those organisms. Mildew will be the first to look in the home; however, mildew is mold in the first phase. It only takes 24 to 48 hours for mold growths (or colonies) to start growing in a moist area. Once it’s begun to grow you shouldn’t use fans to dry a room. This is only going to make the mold disperse. Discard all wet items in your home including carpets whenever possible.

You can eliminate mold from clothes, bedding, and toys by cleaning and disinfecting those items. With clothes and bedding – add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to a load of laundry. Continue to wash in this fashion until all traces of mold are gone and garments do not have a moldy smell anymore. Complete this process by washing your clothes one more time with regular laundry detergent. Toys should be put in a skillet with a mixture of 2 cups of white vinegar and 1/2 liter of warm water. If all the mold isn’t removed following this step then place back toys in the skillet and then include 2 foaming denture cleansing tablets and warm water. Again, let toys soak overnight and wash using a brush.

Any foods that had a remote chance of getting moist ought to be discarded immediately. The only foods which need to be stored are sealed packaged foods and canned goods which haven’t been damaged or dented. Remove tags whatsoever. Wash sealed packages with a warm water/dishwashing liquid mix. Scrub using a bristle brush. Another remedy is to boil for 10 minutes. It’s very important to eliminate the labels since the paper can hold dangerous bacteria.

The more quickly you can start cleaning the interior of your house the easier it’ll be to rid of the mold and mildew growing in your walls, appliances, flooring, and ceilings. Be sure that you wear gloves, a mask, and an eye protectant. You should have the area you are working in at the time well ventilated. Then rinse with fresh water. The best way to deal with this situation would be to remove all that’s been soaked by floodwaters at least on the flooding level. If your house gets the blown-in cellulose type of insulating material it’s ideal to rid of them because it holds water for this long time. Styrofoam and fiberglass batts may be reused if hosed off and dried completely.

For insurance purposes, it is best to take lots of before and after photos. Keep a daily activity log containing all calls made to your insurance company and conversations that took place. Make sure to keep all the receipts used to purchase everything – right on down to the cleaning materials. And do not throw any damaged stuff away until your insurance provider provides you the go-ahead.
